Basic Mediation Training
This training is the first step toward an effective and fulfilling mediation practice. Through thought-provoking conversations, engaging exercises, and simulated practice we lay the foundation of theory, skills, and orientation for new mediators. Over the course of the training, participants will:
- Learn about the spectrum of ADR practices, and how mediation stands apart.
- Become oriented to the values and perspective of an effective mediator.
- Explore issues of identity, values, and bias and how they impact conflict and mediation.
- Gain concrete skills to support individuals in conflict reach effective resolutions, even during impasse.
- Have lots of fun learning and exploring new concepts and skills through play.
- Try their mediation skills in simulated role play, with individual support and feedback.
This basic mediation training is designed to give new mediators a firm foundation in facilitative mediation, with a strategic blend of theory and practice. The five core values of mediation (Self-Determination; Impartiality; Confidentiality; Safety; and Quality) are a touchstone of the training and are woven throughout the training agenda.

Pursuant to Part 146, court-based mediation rosters require both a combination of mediation training and experience mediating;
Acceptance on court rosters depends on a court’s need for mediators at any given time and may include a court’s need for mediators with specific case-type training or experience and mediation experience;
Final placement on any court roster is in the discretion of the local Administrative Judge.
